Changes to .CA domain registrations
As of October 13, 2010, CIRA updated its registry system and changed how certain .CA domain names can be registered.
Previously, it was possible to register third- and fourth-level .CA domains, including domains that could overlap across regions (for example: mydomain.on.ca or mydomain.bc.ca).
These types of domain registrations are no longer generally available.
What is available now?
- Second-level domains (e.g., mydomain.ca) are the standard and widely available option
- New third- and fourth-level domains are no longer permitted
Exception:
- Some fourth-level municipal domains may still be available in limited cases
Existing domains
Any third- or fourth-level .CA domains that were registered before October 13, 2010:
- Will continue to be supported
- Can still be renewed and managed
