What is a .LAW domain?
.LAW is a restricted top-level domain (TLD) designed to promote trust and credibility within the legal community. It creates an exclusive online space for qualified lawyers and authorized legal institutions.
Registration is limited to verified legal professionals and organizations such as law firms, law schools, courts, and legal regulators.
Registration restrictions
.LAW domains are available worldwide, but only to eligible registrants. The registry may request proof of eligibility at any time, and verification is an ongoing requirement.
To register a .LAW domain, the registrant must be one of the following:
- A Qualified Lawyer
A professional licensed by a legal regulator to practice law. The lawyer must be currently authorized to provide legal services and identifiable in official public records. Lawyers with inactive or non-practicing status are not eligible. - A Law Firm
A partnership or incorporated entity formed by one or more qualified lawyers to practice law. Where required, the firm must be authorized by a legal regulator. - A Court of Law
A government-established body with authority to adjudicate legal disputes and administer justice. - A Law School
An institution approved by a legal or educational authority to provide training required to become a qualified lawyer. - A Legal Regulator
An organization established by law to regulate the provision of legal services (e.g., bar associations).
Required information for registration
At the time of registration, applicants must provide accurate and complete information.
Qualified Lawyers must provide:
- Full name as registered with their legal regulator
- Name of their regulator (e.g., State Bar)
- Year of registration
- License or registration number
- Jurisdiction (country and, if applicable, state/province/region)
Authorized Legal Institutions must provide:
- Full official organization name
- Name of regulator or governing body (if applicable)
- Year of accreditation or formation
- License number or identifying reference (if applicable)
- Jurisdiction of operation
If an organization is not governed by a legal regulator, they may provide the name of an overseeing authority, relevant legislation, or indicate “N/A” where appropriate.
Domain requirements
.LAW domains must follow standard naming rules:
- 1–63 characters in length
- Letters (A–Z), numbers (0–9), and hyphens allowed
- Cannot begin or end with a hyphen
- No spaces or special characters (e.g., & or #)
- IDNs (internationalized domain names) are supported
