Overview & What to Expect: Propagation
If you recently updated your domain's nameservers and your website or email service is currently unavailable, this is often caused by ongoing DNS propagation or missing records at your new DNS manager.
Keep in mind how nameserver updates propagate across the internet:
Propagation Time: Nameserver changes take time to update across global Internet Service Providers (ISPs). This process typically takes a few hours, but can take up to 24–48 hours to fully complete globally.
Temporary Service Inconsistencies: During propagation, some visitors may see your site on the old server while others see the new server (or an error), depending on how quickly their local internet provider updates its cached DNS records.
Troubleshooting: Website or Email Still Down?
If your website or email is not loading properly after updating your nameservers and waiting for complete propagation, complete these step-by-step checks:
1. Perform a Public WHOIS Lookup
Perform a public WHOIS lookup (or DNS lookup) for your domain name to check which nameservers the global network currently sees.
If the WHOIS displays incorrect nameservers: Your nameserver update may not have saved or fully processed at your registrar. Please reach out directly to support at your domain registrar to verify the delegation.
2. Check Advanced DNS Settings & IP Addresses
If the WHOIS lookup displays the correct nameservers but your website or email remains offline, log into your active DNS provider's control panel and check the following:
Nameserver IP Records: Ensure that your custom nameservers themselves are pointing to the correct IP addresses provided by your DNS host.
A Records: Confirm that your main A record exists and points to the correct hosting server IP address for your website.
MX Records: Verify that your mail exchange (MX) records are present and configured correctly according to your email provider.
TXT Records: Check that any required verification or security records (such as SPF, DKIM, or DMARC) are properly added.
Make any required corrections and allow time for the updated DNS records to propagate.
Need Extra Help?
If you run into any issues during setup, or if your site remains offline after the 24–48 hour propagation window has passed and you have done the necessary troubleshooting steps, please connect with our support team.
Action: Connect directly with a Live Agent via chat or phone call.
What to provide: Share your domain name, the nameservers you intended to set, and your web hosting IP address.
Specialist Action: A technical support specialist will inspect your active DNS zone, verify your server glue records, and resolve backend routing blocks.
