If your website or email service goes offline due to a Disk Space Exhaustion or Account Suspended alert, your hosting account has exceeded its allocated plan storage.

When your hosting plan reaches 100 percent or more of its capacity, background server scripts automatically trigger a safety suspension to protect shared server stability. While support can manually unsuspend your account to grant temporary access, the background system will automatically re-lock the site (often overnight around 3:00 AM) if total usage remains over 100 percent.

Follow this step-by-step guide, ordered from easiest to most advanced, to clear space and permanently stop the auto-suspension loop.

Step 1: Check Where Space Is Being Used

Before deleting anything, identify where your storage is hiding:
  1. Log into your Plesk Control Panel.
  2. Click Statistics in the left sidebar.
  3. Plesk displays a visual breakdown across Mail, Web Files, Databases, Logs, and Backups.

Step 2: Clean Up or Archive Email Data

Email accounts are usually the safest place to clear space without affecting website functionality.

A. Empty Trash, Junk, and Spam Folders

  1. Log into Webmail (webmail.yourdomain.com) or your desktop email client such as Outlook, Apple Mail, or Thunderbird.

  2. Open the Trash or Deleted Items folder and purge all contents.

  3. Open the Junk or Spam folder and purge all contents.

  4. Check your Webmail quota indicator to verify that it shows reduced usage immediately.

B. Delete Old Emails and Large Attachments

  1. Go to your Inbox and Sent Items folders.

  2. Delete very old emails going back years or decades that are no longer needed.

  3. Sort messages by Size (largest first) and delete old emails containing heavy attachments like PDFs, videos, or ZIP files.

  4. Empty the Trash folder again to permanently free up that server space.

C. Archive Emails Locally

If you need to keep historical emails but want them removed from the hosting server:
  1. Open any desktop email application like Outlook, Apple Mail, or Thunderbird.

  2. Move old messages from your server IMAP folders into a Local Folder or On My Computer folder inside your app.

  3. If your app supports exports, you can save them to an archive file on your hard drive, such as PST for Outlook or MBOX for Apple Mail and Thunderbird. If your app does not support PST or MBOX files, simply dragging and dropping emails into a local folder on your computer keeps them safe on your device while removing them from the server.

  4. Delete the archived emails from your server folders and empty the Trash.

  5. Log into Webmail at webmail.yourdomain.com to confirm server space was freed while your local desktop copy remains saved.

Step 3: Clear Temporary Website Files and Local Backups

If email cleanup is not enough, inspect your website files using Plesk File Manager:

A. Empty Plesk Trash

In Plesk File Manager, click Empty Trash to permanently purge previously deleted files sitting in the recycler.

B. Remove Backup Plugin Archives

If you use WordPress backup plugins such as UpdraftPlus, All in One WP Migration, or BackupBuddy, look inside your domain folder:
  • yourdomain.com > wp-content > updraft
  • yourdomain.com > wp-content > ai1wm-backups
Keep one recent backup copy (downloading it to your computer first if needed), then select and delete older archive files (like ZIP or TAR.GZ) from previous months or years.

C. Clear Image Optimizer Originals

Plugins like ShortPixel or Smush store original uncompressed images in folders like yourdomain.com > wp-content > uploads > ShortPixelBackups. Since your live site uses the optimized versions, you can safely delete the contents of these backup folders.

Step 4: Disable Debug Logs and Identify Hidden Files

If WordPress debugging is left enabled, every minor error or bot attack records a line of text, causing a single debug.log file to swell to tens of gigabytes.

How to Disable Debugging in Plesk (No Code Required):

  1. Log into your Plesk Control Panel.

  2. Go to WordPress in the left sidebar to open the WordPress Toolkit.

  3. Under your domain's dashboard, look for the Debugging toggle in the Tools section.

  4. Toggle Debugging to OFF. (This automatically updates your site configuration without needing to edit wp-config.php manually).

  5. Open Plesk File Manager, navigate to yourdomain.com > wp-content, and delete the debug.log file.

Example of an Audited Directory Over Quota:

4.0K advanced-cache.php
16K ai1wm-backups
806M cache
80GB debug.log (Runaway error log file!)
2.8M index.php
355M plugins
139M themes
12M updraft
6.4GB uploads
12K wflogs
Important Notice Regarding Website File Cleanups:
Modifying or deleting core website files, theme files, databases, or active uploads inside yourdomain.com > wp-content > uploads can break your live website if done incorrectly.
Rebel is responsible for hosting platform infrastructure and cannot directly manage, edit, or selectively delete custom website code and plugin data on your behalf.
If you are unsure which website files are safe to delete, we strongly recommend contacting your web developer, IT professional, or site administrator to perform the cleanup.

Step 5: Next Steps: Technical Escalation or Hosting Upgrade

If you have completed all the steps above and are still exceeding your storage limit:

Option A: Escalate to Our Hosting Engineering Team

If you have cleared all visible files but your account remains over quota, contact Rebel Support. Our team can generate an escalation ticket to our Hosting Engineering Team. They can run deep server-level audits to locate hidden system logs, temp files, or orphaned database files and safely remove them for you.

Option B: Upgrade or Explore Larger Storage Solutions

If your business needs to store larger volumes of data, you can upgrade to our higher-tier Business Web Hosting plans, which support up to 200 GB of storage.

If your storage needs far exceed standard shared web hosting limits (for example, hundreds of gigabytes or terabytes of media assets, backups, or archives), you may want to look into specialized cloud infrastructure or dedicated hosting environments. Some popular options outside our platform include:
  • Offsite Cloud Object Storage: Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage, or Backblaze B2 (ideal for offloading massive media libraries or backup archives cheaply).

  • Unmanaged VPS or Cloud Compute: DigitalOcean, Linode / Akamai, or Hetzner (great for large scalable drives if you have a developer or sysadmin managing your server).

  • Managed Dedicated Servers: Fully managed VPS or dedicated server providers that specialize in customizable high-capacity storage drives.

Why Dashboard Meters Take Time to Update

After deleting files, your Plesk dashboard visual meter might still display high usage because statistics recalculate during nightly maintenance runs.

As long as physical files are deleted from File Manager or Webmail, your account is safe from automated re-suspension even if the dashboard visual meter takes up to 24 hours to sync.
